If you’re crafty and like to create fun projects then you’ll love the Cricut Maker! I’ve been playing around with my Cricut machine and made these adorable baby onesies!
My husband purchased the Cricut Maker for me two years ago for Christmas. There are SO many fun things you can create using the Cricut Maker. I totally wish I had this when I was teaching because I could have made cute name tags and other classroom decor with it!
I had some plain white onesies on hand and some supplies that came with the Cricut. I had so much fun making them that I wanted to share a step-by-step guide on how I created them!
Materials that you’ll need:
- Cricut Maker or Silhouette machine
- Cricut Cutting Mat
- Weeding Tool
- Baby Onesies (Gerber 5-Pack)
- Glitter Iron-on or Heat Transfer Vinyl (same thing)
- Cricut Heat Press or Iron
- Ironing Board
- Parchment Paper
Creating Your Design
There is definitely a learning curve at first, but once you watch a few YouTube videos and play around with your Cricut it becomes easier and easier.
First, you’re going to download the app called Cricut Design Space. This is what you’ll use to create your image. This is where you will create all your fun projects! I almost always use the free images that come with the Cricut Design Space but most of the images you have to pay for, unless you pay for the Cricut Access subscription where you would have access to unlimited amount of images and fonts to choose from.
I used free images and downloaded free fonts for my baby onesies. You’ll want to make sure your images and text are small enough to fit onto the onesie. All of my images were around 3-5 inches tall and wide.
While you’re still in Cricut Design Space, don’t forget to use the “Weld” function. This allows your image or text to weld together so that everything cuts together in one piece.
Tip: When you’re creating your image in Cricut Design Space, one of the last steps you need to do is mirror your image or text! This is super important because this will ensure that it reads correctly from left to right. The design or text should look backwards when you mirror it! This is what it should look like before and after.
Select that you’re using “Iron-On” or “Heat Transfer Vinyl” so that your machine will apply the right amount of pressure when cutting your image.
Then, click “Make It”.
Using the Cricut Maker
Now load your mat with your Iron-On or Vinyl. I recommend using the green cutting mat, which is a standard grip. It will be sticky enough to hold the vinyl in place so that it doesn’t move around when the machine is cutting your design.
When you load your mat with the Iron-On or Vinyl, put the shiny side facedown and the matte side facing up. Press the Vinyl firmly onto your mat and click the arrow button to load the mat into the machine. Then, click the Cricut button to cut your design.
Tip: You don’t have to buy or use Cricut branded products when using your Cricut machine. There are other products that you can use out there that are more affordable and work just as good as the Cricut products.
Once everything is cut, you’ll press the arrow button again to unload the mat. Cut off the excess Vinyl to use later, and then weed your image using your weeding tool. This will pull away the leftover Vinyl so that the image is left on the plastic film. Pull up a corner and pull away the excess.
Ironing Your Design
Lay your onesie flat on the ironing board. Use your hand to flatten out any wrinkles. Then, place your image onto the onesie, lay it in the center. You may need to measure the sides to see if looks center. If you’re using an iron, turn off the steam and set it to the hottest setting.
Lay the parchment paper down on top of your onesie, this acts as a buffer between your design and the iron. Then, press hard with your iron. I pressed it on for about 60 seconds. You’ll know when it’s done when the plastic film comes right off. If the vinyl is not sticking to the onesie then press down firmly with your iron for another 30 seconds.
It’s important to know if your vinyl is hot peel or cold peel. Hot peel means you remove the liner when the design is still hot and cold peel means the liner is removed when the design has cooled completely.
Tip: Wash your onesies beforehand, that way it’s ready to be worn once you’ve finished making them! When you need to wash it, flip the onesie inside out and lay flat to dry or dry on the lowest heat setting.
This was such an easy fun project and I hope you’re inspired to make some for your little one too! These would make great baby shower gifts!
I also made matching sister shirts for my girls and loved how they turned out. Let me know below which design you like the best!
